Indications and Dosage
Oral
Antacid
Adult: 400 mg daily.

Bowel preparation
Adult: As a single dose: 3.5 g, usually combined with bisacodyl or sodium picosulfate.

Oral
Nutritional supplementation
Adult: 800 mg daily.
Contraindications
Renal failure.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment, bowel obstruction.
Adverse Reactions
Cramping, diarrhoea, rashes, hives, itching, vomiting and upset stomach; hypermagnesaemia; paralytic ileus.
Drug Interactions
May decrease absorption of tetracyclines and bisphosphonates; separate administration of these and other drugs by around 2 hr.
